Whuti: Dr Daniel McKoley, the Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies, has called upon stakeholders to actively support the Volta Region in harnessing its abundant natural resources, which remain largely untapped. He announced that the region holds the potential to generate approximately $9 billion in opportunities, particularly for the youth, thereby addressing the high unemployment rate in both the region and the country at large.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr McKoley made these remarks at the inaugural Volta Economic Forum held in Whuti, located in the Anloga district of the Volta Region. Despite its rich resources, he emphasized that the region’s full potential has not been realized. He urged stakeholders to reflect on whether it is due to attitude, nature, or a lack of deliberate action that these resources, including timber, iron, and high-quality stone, remain underutilized.
The entrepreneur highlighted the region’s significant tourism potential, with its scenic attractions, waterfalls, and cultural sites that could develop into a hub for health tourism. He also pointed out that Volta’s fertile land and water resources offer substantial agricultural potential, which, if leveraged effectively, could generate billions.
Dr McKoley passionately argued for intentional action and investment to unlock the region’s potential. As an entrepreneur, he saw vast opportunities for wealth and employment in the region and called for an active role from the private sector, supported by government initiatives. He also emphasized the importance of empowering the youth, who comprise about 70 percent of the population, and advocated for the adoption of a 24-hour economy to initiate change.
Stressing the importance of infrastructural development, he noted that improved connectivity is vital for facilitating economic activities. Dr McKoley encouraged the private sector to spearhead growth and development initiatives, suggesting that even a small start could lead to significant outcomes.
Mr Eric Opoku, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, also spoke at the event, highlighting opportunities for investment in green energy and renewable sources like solar power. He envisioned the Volta Economic Corridor as a potential hub for Lake cruises and improved rural-urban connectivity, positioning Ghana as a key player in regional production and trade.
