Dompuase: Dompuase MA Basic School in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region is facing significant challenges due to a lack of furniture and WASH facilities, which are crucial for promoting effective teaching and learning, according to school authorities.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Juliana Arthur, the Headmistress of Dompuase MA Basic School, highlighted the severe shortage of furniture which often forces pupils to sit on the floor during lessons. She noted that teachers sometimes have to give up their chairs to accommodate the students. The school also lacks essential facilities like urinals, exacerbating the difficulties faced by the institution.
Madam Arthur made these remarks during the inaugural MJ Brain Battle Quiz Competition held at the school, an event aimed at motivating students to focus on their academic pursuits and enhancing educational initiatives within the municipality.
The quiz competition, organized by MJ Media Foundation, showcased the talents of pupils from lower primary, upper primary, and junior high school (J.H.S) levels. Miss Juliet Enyonam Korkor, Executive Director of MJ Media Foundation, observed that rural communities, particularly in the Amenfi East Municipality, receive minimal attention in terms of educational development.
Miss Korkor expressed concern about the potential long-term impact of neglecting educational infrastructure in these areas, emphasizing that without urgent interventions, the goal of achieving universal basic education may become unattainable.
During the competition, students demonstrated their skills in subjects including mathematics, reading, spelling, and debate. Basic Two claimed victory in the lower primary category with 13 marks, Basic Six emerged as winners in the upper primary category with 45 marks, and Basic Seven triumphed in the JHS category with 48 marks. The winning teams were rewarded with trophies, medals, customized souvenirs, stationery, and certificates of participation.
Madam Florence Minnah, the Akropong ‘A’ School Improvement Support Officer, praised the event’s organizers and urged local stakeholders to support similar initiatives to positively influence the pupils’ future.
