Akatsi: Mr Pascal Agbagba, the Volta Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has called for intensified efforts in educating the public on the need to resort to disaster prevention. He emphasized the importance of using quality materials and ensuring proper construction in safer locations as part of these efforts.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Agbagba made the call at Akatsi, where over 50 victims of a rainstorm disaster gathered to receive financial aid from Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for the area. Mr Agbagba stated that his organization is focusing on prevention sensitization to mitigate the rising cases of disasters, many of which are caused by human actions. He explained that government relief support during emergencies might not be sufficient for affected individuals, underscoring the importance of prevention management practices to avoid such disturbances.
Mr Agbagba also highlighted instances where developers ignored safety requirements, such as building on waterways and using inferior construction materials. Some stakeholders believe that such prevention-focused strategies could significantly contribute to the region's growth by minimizing property destruction due to non-compliance.
Mr Ahiafor, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, donated GHC100,000 to be distributed among 50 victims of rainstorm and fire disasters that occurred in his Constituency this year. He mentioned that the funds were sourced from Parliament, led by Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, to support constituents severely affected by the disaster.
