Accra: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has successfully apprehended Abubakar Sadick, an absentia convict involved in a car robbery syndicate operating across Ghana. Sadick and his alleged accomplices reportedly posed as members of non-governmental organizations or religious groups to deceive car rental companies into renting vehicles, which they then stole.
According to Ghana News Agency, Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director General of the CID, disclosed this information during a joint press conference with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA). She detailed how Abubakar rented a Toyota Land Cruiser for supposed missions, only to rob the vehicle by tying the driver to a tree in Malzeri, near Yendi. An incident of a similar nature took place in January 2023, involving another stolen Land Cruiser.
COP Donkor revealed that Abubakar had been on the police wanted list since November 11, 2022. In April 2023, a Toyota Vitz was also stolen and subsequently sold in Bolgatanga. Through thorough investigations and ongoing intelligence efforts, the police identified Abubakar as the primary suspect, leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest. He was placed on the police wanted list, immigration stop list, and an Interpol red notice.
In February 2023, the Ghana Police were informed of Abubakar's arrest by the Burkina Faso Police, but he escaped before his extradition could be completed. On July 28, 2025, Abubakar Sadick was finally arrested in Accra through a collaborative operation involving the CID's Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and National Security. COP Donkor noted that he is currently assisting the police in their investigation.
The Cape Coast High Court had previously sentenced Abubakar in absentia to 25 years of imprisonment with hard labor for a 2021 robbery in Breman Asikuma. COP Donkor also mentioned that Abubakar is implicated in several other car thefts that are still under investigation.
She urged the public, especially car rental operators and those who have fallen victim to similar incidents, to report to the CID Headquarters to aid in the ongoing investigations, while efforts continue to apprehend the alleged accomplices.
Mr. Divine Selase Agbeti, Director General of the Cyber Security Authority, emphasized that the collaboration between the police and CSA underscores a shared commitment to creating a safer and more secure digital environment for all residents and businesses in Ghana.
