Tema Traditional Council Stands Firm Against Non-Indigene MCE Appointment

Tema: The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) has reaffirmed its commitment to a long-standing oath made to their ancestors, declaring that they will not accept a non-indigene as the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema. The council emphasized that the covenant, established through a traditional blood oath in 2017 and 2021, remains unbroken and binding.

According to Ghana News Agency, this stance was detailed in a letter from Nii Adjetey Agbo II, the Mankralo and Acting President of the TTC, addressed to the National Vetting Committee, MMDCE. The letter highlighted the sacred nature of the oath and the council's unwavering adherence to it, stating that any non-indigene mayor would not be welcomed by the TTC or allowed entry into their palace.

The council expressed awareness of attempts to impose a non-indigene on them, describing such actions as disrespectful. They noted that the only instance of a non-indigene being appointed as MCE occurred during the tenure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and stated that a recurrence would be unacceptable.

The TTC underscored the significance of their sacrifices, such as providing land for the creation of the Tema Port and the planned city. They asserted that imposing a non-indigene would undermine their identity and contributions. Additionally, the council expressed concern that indigenes have not been appointed to positions in state-owned and para-state institutions under the NDC's governance.

The letter concluded by reaffirming the council's determination to maintain the tradition of appointing an indigene as the Mayor of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, emphasizing the importance of having a representative who understands and respects their sacred traditions.
