Chief of Staff, Traditional Leaders, Athletes Join Commonwealth Kings Baton Relay

Accra: Mr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, together with other high-profile dignitaries and Ghanaian athletes, has received the Baton for the 2026 Commonwealth Games as a symbol of shared connection and diversity among the 74 commonwealth nations and territories. Ghana's baton, designed by Albert Obidiaba, a multidisciplinary artiste, carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, promoting peace and cooperation.According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Debrah highlighted that the accomplishments of legendary athletes such as Azumah Nelson, Stanley, Joshua Owusu, and Ignatius Gaisah have secured Ghana a notable place in the history of the event. 'President Mahama's government remains fully committed to identifying, nurturing, and developing talents across all disciplines,' he said. He charged the team not only to participate in the Commonwealth but also to aim to win laurels for Ghana.The Chief of Staff mentioned that the government was collaborating with the Ghana Olympic Committee and o ther relevant bodies to field the best athletes on the world stage. He emphasized, 'The era of unqualified athletes and officials representing Ghana at international events is over.' Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Staff for the continuous commitment to sports.The delegation from the GOC, after presenting the baton to the presidency, walked through the principal streets of Accra. Some prominent personalities and authorities who have received the baton include the Aburihene, Aburi Girls Senior High School, Adonten Senior High School, Chief of Dodowa, among others.
