Accra: The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to take immediate action to ensure that the recent strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi translates into tangible relief for the public.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Deputy Minority Leader, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, stated that while the improvement in exchange rate stability was welcomed, its impact on the cost of living remained to be seen. Madam Appiagyei made the remarks on Wednesday in Parliament House during a Leaders’ Media Briefing.
The Leaders’ Media Briefing is a periodic engagement between the Leadership of the House and the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) at the beginning of every Meeting of Parliament to outline the framework of the Meeting. It also serves as a platform of interaction between the Leaders, the Media Relations Department of Parliament, and the PPC.
‘Everybody is happy that the cedi has become very strong, the exchange rate is coming down, but what is its effect on the cost of living despite the gains that we are experiencing?’ she asked. ‘It is important that certain actions are taken to ensure that the downward trend of the cedi to the dollar will have a reflection on the cost of living in our country,’ the Deputy Minority Leader said.
