Bonoman Institute Initiates Project to Officialise Bono Twi Language

Sunyani: The Bonoman Institute, a civil society organisation, has embarked on the 'Bono Twi Project' aiming to facilitate the official documentation, recognition, and use of the 'Bono Twi' language. The initiative is a significant step toward preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Bono and Bono Regions.

According to Ghana News Agency, the launch event, held in Sunyani, featured Mr. Kofi Okofo Dartey, the Dean of the Bonoman Institute, who highlighted the project's objective to adopt Bono Twi as an official local dialect in schools. The project, themed 'Language; Our Identity, Culture, and Way of Life,' seeks to sustain Bono Twi as an essential part of the Bono cultural identity.

Mr. Dartey explained that the project aims to promote the cultural values of the Bono people, encompassing their heritage, history, natural resources, and tourism, thereby unlocking potential for economic growth. The Bible Society of Ghana is collaborating with the Institute by providing basic reading materials in the Bono Twi language.

The Institute's mandate includes uniting Bono residents both locally and abroad, promoting shared values, and advancing regional development. Mr. Dartey emphasized the project's focus on encouraging the academic study and use of the Bono Twi language, alongside other goals like preserving natural resources and fostering national inclusiveness.

Mr. Dartey expressed concerns about the regions' developmental challenges, such as insufficient social and economic infrastructure, high illiteracy, and youth unemployment. He stressed the importance of unity in addressing these issues and fostering sustainable development.

Nana Okokyeredom Sakyi Arko II, Vice-President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, assured the Institute of the House's continued support and urged parents and students to actively engage with the project. Mr. William Kwasi Sabi, Board Chairman of the Institute, encouraged the Bono people to take pride in their culture and mentioned the Institute's aspirations to become a research center.
