Asante-Akim Central’s Independence Day Parade Limited to SHSs Amid Cost-Cutting Measures

Asante-Akim Central: In line with the President's directive for a modest celebration of Ghana's 68th Independence Anniversary, only three Senior High Schools in Asante-Akim Central Municipality participated in the event this year. Unlike previous years when primary, junior high, and senior high schools actively took part in the annual event, this year's celebration was limited to only SHS to reflect the cost-cutting measures espoused by the government.

According to Ghana News Agency, the schools that participated were Konongo-Odumasi Senior High, Konongo Wesley Senior High School, and Dwease-Praaso Technical Institute. The school cadet of Konongo-Odumasi Senior High School enhanced the parade with a display of marching skills and brass band music. Chiefs from Konongo and Odumasi, along with Municipal Commanders of Security Agencies, Assembly Members, Heads of Departments, political party representatives, and the Municipal Director of Education attended the event.

The ceremony, although short, was impressive, showcasing the marching prowess of the schools to the admiration of the gathering, who applauded their efforts. Mr. Joseph Frimpong Naayo, the Municipal Coordinating Director, urged the gathering to reflect on the struggles of forebears for their steadfastness in the fight for freedom and governance. He emphasized that the event's theme, 'Reflect, Review, Reset', was chosen to remind Ghanaians to take stock of their journey, acknowledge achievements and shortfalls, and recommit to values for a better future.

Mr. Naayo highlighted the devastating effects of illegal mining on the environment and stressed the need for collective action against the menace threatening food security. He urged the public to draw inspiration from the determination and sacrifice of forebears to continue the journey toward a just, equitable, inclusive society, free from corruption, illegal mining, and environmental pollution.

Mr. Sarfo Kantanka, the Municipal Director of Education, reiterated the importance of honoring the country's forefathers for their sacrifices that led to Ghana's liberation 68 years ago. He encouraged the people to use the occasion to reflect on the nation's progress, challenges, and aspirations by recommitting to the values of patriotism, unity, and solidarity.
