Accra: The Alliance for Just Green Climate Innovations has urged Ghana’s climate stakeholders to actively include persons with disabilities in national climate responses, innovation efforts, and adaptation strategies for inclusive sustainability. In a statement marking the 2025 National Day for Persons with Disabilities, the Alliance emphasized that although climate change affects everyone, it does not impact all equally.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Alliance noted that persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable to climate impacts but are often excluded from decision-making, resource access, and innovation processes. ‘A truly just and green transition can only be achieved when climate action is inclusive of all, especially the most marginalized,’ the statement said. The Day was observed under the theme ‘Advancing Inclusive Education for All.’
The Alliance urged inclusive innovation, representation, equitable implementation, and improved data and accountability. It called on government agencies, civil society, development partners, and the private sector to design and implement accessible and disability-responsive climate solutions. ‘From early warning systems to clean energy projects, every solution must be co-created with persons with disabilities to ensure no one is left behind,’ it stated.
The group also advocated for increased participation of persons with disabilities in climate policymaking, their representation on local and national climate bodies, and investments in inclusive climate education. It underscored the importance of disaggregated data that reflects the lived experiences of persons with disabilities and emphasized inclusive education as essential for building resilience and empowering them as climate change agents.
‘As we celebrate the achievements of disability rights advocates, we must also reaffirm our commitment to a climate response that is just, inclusive, and empowering,’ the Alliance added. It called on the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, the Environmental Protection Authority, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and development partners to place persons with disabilities at the centre of Ghana’s climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
