Aflao: The Aflao Traditional Council has expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his swift and compassionate response to the plight of some Ketu South residents affected by recent devastating tidal waves. The President, immediately after delivering his Independence Day Anniversary speech in Accra, traveled to Agavedzi, one of the coastal communities in Ketu South, hardest hit by the recurring menace, to inspect the ravages caused and to present some items to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
According to Ghana News Agency, along with the President were his younger brother and Managing Director of Engineers and Planners, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, and Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, among others, who made donations to support the tidal wave victims. The Council, in a release signed by its President and Paramount Chief of Aflao, Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, indicated that Mr. Mahama's decision to leave the March 06 parade to personally visit and console the victims demonstrated leadership, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians.
The release emphasized, "His presence reassured the affected communities that they are not alone in this tough time and that their voices are heard. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for his exceptional generosity in donating GHS100,000 to support the victims. This is yet another testament to his remarkable humanitarian spirit, which extends far beyond the shores of Ghana. His kindness and dedication to helping those in distress continue to inspire hope and bring relief to countless lives."
Further, the statement acknowledged the contribution of Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, who provided 250 bags of rice to support affected families. The Council expressed gratitude to all individuals, organizations, and well-meaning Ghanaians who have offered relief, noting that these acts of kindness embody the spirit of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility that define the community.
The release reminded the public that while immediate relief efforts bring comfort, there is an urgent need for a lasting solution to the recurring coastal erosion crisis, which has recently displaced hundreds of people and destroyed livelihoods. The Council appealed for more support from the government, corporate bodies, development partners, and philanthropists to provide both emergency assistance and long-term measures to protect vulnerable coastal communities.
