Adongo Mocks Minority Caucus for Abandoning ‘Free Wontumi Now’ Protest

Accra: Mr. Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga, has mocked the Minority Caucus for rescinding their decision to boycott parliamentary sittings in solidarity with Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. During Friday's parliamentary sitting, members of the Minority Caucus who had walked out the day before, reported to the chamber of Parliament, in Accra, for the business of the House.

According to Ghana News Agency, the members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament had staged a walkout on Thursday, 29 May 2025, protesting the continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman. The action came after Wontumi's legal team failed to meet the conditions for a GHS50 million bail granted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the protest, delivering a strongly worded address on the floor of the House. The Minority Caucus, led by its leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, subsequently gathered at the entrance of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to protest the continuous detention of Chairman Wontumi in EOCO custody. The Caucus is asking EOCO to relax the bail conditions for Chairman Wontumi. Chairman Wontumi has been charged for causing financial loss to the state in Ghana Export-import Bank (EXIMBANK) contract deal.

In view of the sudden change of action by the Minority, Mr. Adongo remarked on the floor of the House: 'Aaah!.Why are you here?.You told us yesterday that you're boycotting parliamentary sitting to sleep at EOCO with Chairman Wontumi. So, we expected you to be sleeping at EOCO. 'So, why are you deceiving Wontumi that you'll be sleeping with him at EOCO.now, you're here asking questions about Eid holidays'. Mr. Adongo's comments sparked spontaneous cheers and laughter from both sides of the House.

Subsequently, Mr. Frank Annor-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, remarked: 'The mood of the House is not good' and urged the Leader of the House to address it. In response, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, remarked in a jovial manner 'the mood of the House is good' and said it repeatedly, amid cheers and laughter.
