Youth Urged to Embrace Dialogue to Resolve Post-Election Disputes

Accra: The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to resort to dialogue rather than violence when addressing misunderstandings with their neighbors. This advice aims to ensure peaceful resolution of disputes without jeopardizing the nation's peace and stability.

According to Ghana News Agency, the call for dialogue was made by Mrs. Lucille Hewlett Annan, Secretary to the Commission, during a post-election violence engagement organized for youth and women groups in the Ayawaso West Municipality, Accra. The engagement, supported by the European Union (EU), was designed to raise awareness about the consequences of violence and the illicit use of arms.

Key topics discussed included the role of youth in promoting post-election peace and stability, the consequences of post-election violence, misinformation and disinformation, and the vigilantism and related offenses act. Mrs. Annan emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles, such as using appropriate channels to address grievances, to maintain stability in Ghana.

She expressed concern over recent post-election violence that has accompanied the transfer of power between political parties, highlighting incidents after the 2024 elections where unknown individuals attacked electoral commission offices and destroyed ballot boxes. State institutions, including the Ghana Gas Company, Passport Office, and Tema Harbour, were reportedly vandalized following the December 7, 2024, general election.

Currently, the parliamentary results for Ablekuma North remain undeclared due to attacks and vandalism by youth groups on the Electoral Commission. Mrs. Annan warned that such violence could undermine Ghana's democracy and erode three decades of progress.

She stressed that resolving conflicts through violence could exacerbate the situation, disrupt national peace and security, deepen divisions, and hinder national cohesion. Mrs. Annan encouraged youth to foster tolerance, unity, and mutual respect in their communities, advocating for dialogue and reconciliation over violence and property destruction.
