Western Region TUC Celebrates International Women’s Day with Public March


Takoradi: The Western Regional office of the Trades Union Congress, Ghana (TUC), has organized a route march to sensitize the public on the contributions of women to societal growth. The event was part of their celebrations of International Women’s Day, focusing on the theme ‘For all Women and Girls: Right, Equality, Empowerment- The Role of Trade Union’.



According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of TUC-GH, emphasized the theme as a reminder that gender equality is a fundamental human right. He praised the contribution of women to national development and urged them to strive for greater achievements. He assured that TUC is committed to protecting workers’ rights, enabling them to perform competently at work, especially women. He also called for a review of labor laws to caution foreign investors who often disregard them.



Madam Harriet Botchway, Head of Department, Gender and Child Protection, highlighted the importance of women empowerment and equality, urging the government to rectify the ILO Convention 190 to address workplace challenges faced by women. She encouraged women to take up roles that would propel them to greater heights.



Madam Salamatu Mahama Briamah, Executive Vice Chairperson of TUC-GH, praised women for their efforts in national development and encouraged them to pursue leadership roles in the corporate world. She urged women to take pride in having a female Vice President and see her as a role model.



Madam Rebecca Kwashie, National Women Council Chairperson, acknowledged women’s role in progress and the need for their inclusion in decision-making processes. Participants expressed happiness about the progress women are making in society.



International Women’s Day is observed worldwide to appreciate women’s achievements and address their challenges in bridging the gender inequality gap.
