Western Region Records One Mpox Death Amid Rising Cases

Takoradi: The Western Regional Health Directorate has recorded one confirmed death case of Mpox in the region. Dr. Gifty Amugi, the Western Regional Deputy Director for Public Health, disclosed that the region has documented a cumulative total of 246 confirmed Mpox cases. Among these, 52 cases are currently active, with two patients on admission, including one in critical condition, and 190 individuals have recovered as of September 18, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, the cumulative suspected cases in the region stand at 724, with 963 contacts listed across 13 out of the 14 districts. Dr. Amugi shared these updates during a media engagement organized by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in Takoradi, aimed at addressing the Mpox situation and promoting awareness to combat the spread of the disease.

The Western Region has become the epicenter of the Mpox outbreak in terms of national figures. Dr. Amugi attributed this to a lag in social behavioral change and a perceived low risk of the disease among the population. She emphasized, "Despite our sustained efforts, the outbreak seems not to abate because the message also seems not to have gone down well with the people, and so we must all do our part to break the chain of infection."

Dr. Amugi urged journalists to use their platforms to amplify education and sensitization on best practices to prevent infection. She highlighted the importance of regular hand washing, avoiding contact with rodents and wild animals, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces as measures to break the transmission chain.

Participants at the engagement pledged their commitment to utilizing their platforms to enhance awareness and sensitize the public to help curb the spread of Mpox in the region.
