Waste Bin Relocated from Sege Presby School; Reckless Refuse Dumping Persists

Sege: The Environmental Health Department of the Ada West District Assembly has relocated a community refuse skip from the Sege Presbyterian Primary School compound.

According to Ghana News Agency, this action followed a publication highlighting the health dangers posed by the refuse container to the school community and the threats from teachers to vacate the premises if no action was taken. The teachers at Sege Community Junior High School, Nos. 1 and 2, and the Sege Presbyterian Primary School had expressed concerns over the health risks associated with the refuse container, including potential cholera outbreaks.

Upon a follow-up visit by the Ghana News Agency to the school, it was observed that while the refuse skip had been moved, some residents continued to dump refuse on the school compound. Mr. Emmanuel Sabbah, Headmaster of Sege Presby No. 2, disclosed that multiple appeals were made to authorities and the assemblyman, but it was not until the publication by the Ghana News Agency that their situation received attention.

Mr. Ernest Dugbanor Kugblenu, the assembly member for the area, attributed the delay in action to the previous administration of the Ada West District Assembly. He noted that in addition to relocating the container, a signpost had been placed at the former site to discourage residents from dumping waste there.

Despite these measures, the headmaster reported that some residents still disposed of waste at the site. He emphasized the need for intensified public education to change behaviors and prevent further indiscriminate dumping.
