Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Urges Unity During National Mourning for Helicopter Crash Victims

Accra: As the nation comes to grips with the loss of eight military personnel in a tragic helicopter crash, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of unity and reflection during this period of mourning.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Vice President called for a focus on sober reflection and attention to detail at an Evening of Reflections and Memorial for the victims, held at the Forecourt of the State House. The event was attended by notable figures including President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Lordina Mahama, and Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio. Other dignitaries present included Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Mr Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang remarked that this was not a time for perfect words or assigning blame, but rather a time to honor the memories and contributions of the departed. She highlighted the shared experiences with the victims and the memories that now remain. The Vice President underscored the national heroes' dedication to their roles and the development agenda of the country.

She acknowledged the range of emotions being felt across the nation, from grief and anger to bewilderment and confusion. She recognized the collective mourning of parents, family members, colleagues, and friends, as well as many others who were affected by the tragedy. Opoku-Agyemang stressed the importance of seeking answers and learning lessons from the incident while avoiding divisive actions and sentiments.

In her closing remarks, the Vice President urged the nation to honor the victims by striving for unity and advancing Ghana's progress. She called for prayers for the families of the deceased and encouraged a renewed commitment to national development, inspired by the dedication of the eight fallen heroes.
