Vegetable Prices Spike in Takoradi Market

Takoradi: Prices of vegetables and other consumables have experienced a rise in the Takoradi central market.

According to Ghana News Agency, a market survey revealed that prices of some vegetables, plantain, and other items have escalated over recent months. Madam Esi Mansa, an onion seller, explained that the producer price of onions had increased, impacting sales in the market. She noted that a sack of onions now costs between GHC1,300 and GHC1,500, with a plastic bowl-sized portion priced at GHC150 to GHC200, a significant increase from the previous GHC100.

Madam Mansa highlighted the challenge, stating that one could previously purchase 10 to 13 medium-sized onions for GHC10, but that is no longer possible at the same price.

Madam Marian Mensah, another vegetable seller, echoed similar concerns, attributing some of the price changes to the availability of commodities, which is often influenced by weather conditions. She mentioned that a sack of green bell pepper now costs GHC1,200, up from GHC800, with other vegetables such as okra and garden eggs also experiencing price hikes.

Conversely, Madam Grace Obeng, a tomato seller, reported that tomato prices have remained stable, noting, "We are in the tomato season, so it is relatively cheaper and affordable on the market."
