Tarkwa: Two individuals who attacked a 24-year-old man with a pair of scissors, subsequently stealing his mobile phone and GHS1,900 in cash, have been sentenced by the District Court Two in Tarkwa. Gilbert Mensah, aged 24, received a two-year prison sentence, while Justice Mensah, aged 18, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. Both convicts are unemployed and admitted guilt to charges of stealing and causing harm.
According to Ghana News Agency, the prosecution, led by Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh, detailed the incident to the court presided over by Mr. Isaac Osei Asare. The complainant, Kwame Batie, resides in Ndadieso, a suburb of Aboso, while the convicts, Gilbert and Justice, live in Aboso, within the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality. On April 24, 2025, at approximately 1200 hours, Batie went to 'Kofi's guest house' in Aboso to buy food. While awaiting service, the convicts confronted him, accusing him of recording a video of Justice in an inebriated state the previous day with his mobile phone.
Sergeant Assan-Donkoh recounted that Batie denied the accusation, but Gilbert proceeded to extract GHS1,900 from Batie's pocket. Subsequently, Gilbert brandished a pair of scissors, demanding Batie's Techno pop 30 Mobile phone, which was valued at GHS1,800, threatening to stab him if he refused. When Batie resisted, Gilbert stabbed him in the back of the head with the scissors, took the phone, and fled the scene when they noticed Batie was bleeding heavily.
A passerby assisted Batie to the police station, where he lodged a formal complaint and received a medical form for treatment. Sergeant Assan-Donkoh informed the court that police apprehended Gilbert and Justice from their hiding place. However, they did not cooperate in recovering Batie's stolen cash and mobile phone.
