Transport Operators Halt Planned Fare Increase After Stakeholder Meeting

Accra: Road transport operators have suspended a planned 20 per cent increase in public transport fares, which was initially scheduled to take effect on Friday, August 8, 2025. The decision came after a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, where stakeholders agreed that the proposed increment lacked adequate consultation.

According to Ghana News Agency, the meeting led to a joint statement signed by Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ankrah, National Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC). The statement announced the suspension of the fare hike due to insufficient consultation with stakeholders.

Furthermore, the statement reiterated the continuation of the existing 15 per cent reduction in public transport fares, which has been in effect since May 24, 2025. "All Transport Operators are to ensure that the 15 per cent reduction is enforced," the statement emphasized, calling for the cooperation of transport operators and the general public.

The GRTCC had previously announced the fare hike, attributing it to rising operational costs, including increased fuel prices and vehicle maintenance expenses. However, mounting public concern and calls for broader stakeholder engagement led to the decision to halt the fare increase.
