Traders and Drivers Praise Sunyani Decongestion Effort, Urge for Continued Enforcement

Sunyani: Traders and commercial drivers at the Sunyani Central Business District (CBD) have expressed their appreciation for the decongestion exercise initiated by the Sunyani Municipal Assembly. They are advocating for the continuation of these efforts through the establishment of a bye-law.

According to Ghana News Agency, the traders and drivers described the increasing congestion in the CBD as problematic, making driving and safety challenging. They have called upon the Assembly to take further measures, including the demolition of unauthorized structures within the area.

The decongestion exercise is being led by Mr. Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), with the aim of restoring order to the CBD. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr. Felix Kusi Felix, a commercial driver, praised the Assembly's efforts and expressed hope that these measures would be sustained.

Auntie Yaa, a local trader, expressed optimism that the Assembly would pass and enforce a bye-law to prevent hawkers and small traders from occupying the streets. She urged those involved not to politicize the exercise to ensure its success.

The MCE informed the media that the Assembly had raised awareness prior to the exercise, emphasizing that vehicles would not be permitted to load passengers in unauthorized areas. He urged commercial drivers to use designated lorry stations for picking up passengers, warning that violations would result in a fine of GHC200.

He assured the community that the Assembly and its partners are committed to maintaining the exercise to foster a conducive environment for commerce in the area. The MCE called for the cooperation of both traders and drivers in achieving this goal.
