TMA Convenes Meeting to Address Unauthorized Structures and Sanitation

Tema: The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has convened a stakeholder meeting to discuss various developmental issues confronting the metropolis, resolving to remove all unauthorized structures and kiosks scattered across the city.

According to Ghana News Agency, the stakeholders' engagement included traditional and religious leaders, staff, and departmental heads, highlighting issues on the siting of kiosks and sanitation concerns. Madam Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, addressed the stakeholders, urging traditional and religious leaders to educate their followers on the need for enforcing order in the metropolis.

Madam Bright announced that the assembly had declared zoning of schools, hospitals, security installations, government premises, and service utility corridors as security zones. This decision entails that no temporary structures are permitted along the fence walls, buffer areas, corridors, or access routes of these facilities. She explained that this move is part of a comprehensive plan to reorganize temporary structures in the metropolis and beautify such places with plants.

Ms. Bright stated that existing structures in those security zones would be removed immediately. The enforcement process will include serving legal notices to offenders, marking structures for demolition, and proceeding with demolition. She advised residents with structures in those zones to remove them, cautioning that failure to comply would result in demolition by the TMA and surcharging of owners.

Madam Bright emphasized that the actions align with the assembly's mandate to maintain a clean city, and the resolve to enforce the law has already led to clearing some structures before the stakeholder meeting. She also touched on sanitation, revealing plans for a two-day sanitation campaign in the Tema Metropolis, ahead of the national sanitation day on November 01, 2025.

The MCE outlined that on October 31, the first day of the campaign, there would be enforcement of development control, removal of temporary structures within security zones, and removal of structures erected after the July 21, 2025, ban. On November 01, the second day, activities will include deep cleaning at the Republic School, known for its traditional significance as it houses the last of the original Tema ancestral gourd trees.

She also mentioned plans for streetlighting repairs and installations, minor infrastructure repairs, public space beautification, among other initiatives.
