Tema Youth Embrace Vocational Training as Means for Secured Livelihoods

Tema: Some youth in Tema are enthusiastically embracing vocational training, by enrolling and acquiring various skills to position themselves for their future livelihoods. They are also seizing opportunities in the vocational training sector to contribute to the community's productivity and Ghana's economic growth.

According to Ghana News Agency, in interactions with some of the youth, they expressed that their interest in vocational training stemmed from its practical skills, a shorter skill acquisition period compared to university programmes, and its lower cost. They highlighted that these vocational programmes are designed to align with the local job market needs, providing them a clear path to employment or self-employment.

Mr. Daniel Ofori, a carpenter, explained that vocational training, as opposed to traditional education, offers a shorter duration of study, lower costs, and a direct focus on job readiness. He noted that "vocational training often leads to quicker employment opportunities in high-demand fields." Mr. Ofori emphasized that the value of vocational training is rising as many industries require specific skills that traditional education might not always cater to, thus broadening job prospects for graduates.

Mr. Kwame Arhin, a barber, pointed out the importance of skilled training programmes for the community, highlighting that they provide a skilled workforce and empower young people to build their future, creating a beneficial situation for the community.

Madam Gifty Opoku, a hairdresser, shared that the long-term career prospects for vocational and technical graduates could be promising, especially in high-demand fields. She mentioned, "many vocational graduates find stable employment and have opportunities for further education and advancement in their careers." Madam Opoku advised the youth to consider vocational training, research different programmes thoroughly, engage with skilled workers, and reflect on their career goals and interests before making career decisions.
