Tema West NADMO and Partners Conduct Fire Prevention Workshop for Market Women

Accra: The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Tema West Municipality, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the National Ambulance Service, has organized a workshop to educate Baatsonaa market women on fire prevention strategies.

According to Ghana News Agency, Nana Tatantu, Tema West Municipal Director of NADMO, stated that this initiative is part of their reset agenda, aiming to establish a visible presence within the municipality. The goal is to assure the public of NADMO's commitment to preventing disasters in the area. The engagement of stakeholders and educational efforts are integral measures to fulfill their mandate.

Nana Tatantu emphasized the importance of such educational initiatives throughout the municipality, especially in slum communities, focusing on fire safety, first aid, and climate-related issues. He encouraged market women to take these educational efforts seriously to protect their products and the makeshift structures they inhabit.

'We don't want to record fire situations before we call on the fire service and NADMO to respond; we want to prevent them. We are encouraging them to take part in these engagements to ensure that we make Tema West a fire-free area,' he stated.

Mr. Joshua Kugblenu, Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO1), the Kasapreko Fire Station Officer, highlighted activities that could lead to fires in markets, such as cooking, illegal electricity connections, overloading prepaid meters, and burning rubbish. He advised traders to adhere to safety measures and cautioned against practices that could contribute to fire outbreaks. He also provided emergency contact numbers for the GNFS and the Tema regional office.

Mr. Saani Adams, a Senior Ambulance Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the Tema West Municipal Ambulance Service, educated traders on emergency protocols. He urged them to contact the service during road accidents, home incidents, and other emergencies, emphasizing that they possess the necessary skills to save lives.
