Tema Port to Undergo Major Dredging to Increase Capacity

Tema: The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is set to embark on an extensive dredging initiative at the Tema Port to increase the harbour's depth, allowing it to accommodate larger vessels. This development was disclosed by Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, the Director General of GPHA, during a media briefing.

According to Ghana News Agency, Brigadier Tanye-Kulono announced that preparations for the dredging project are well underway, with actual work anticipated to commence by the end of next August. Currently, the depth of Tema Port stands at approximately eight meters, but the GPHA plans to increase it to between 12 and 14 meters.

The Director General emphasized the importance of the dredging project, highlighting that many larger vessels are currently unable to dock at Tema Port due to the limited depth. The completion of the dredging is expected to significantly enhance vessel turnaround times by accommodating larger ships.

The dredging is part of a series of infrastructural and operational improvements being implemented by GPHA. These upgrades align with the government's 24-hour economy agenda, which aims to modernize the port to handle increased traffic and larger vessels, thereby maintaining continuous operations.

Brigadier Tanye-Kulono also noted that the GPHA is taking steps to attract more business from landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, which rely on coastal ports for their import and export activities. Additionally, the GPHA has invested in operational logistics, including 45 leased pickup trucks and staff buses, to improve transportation for port workers and support the 24-hour service delivery.
