Tarkwa: The Tarkwa District Court One has sentenced a 21-year-old galamsey operator (illegal miner), Kwadwo Asenso Godden, to a day’s imprisonment for stealing a gold detector machine worth GHS13,000. Aside from the sentence, the court presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah ordered Godden to pay a fine of GHS 1,200 or in default serve three months in prison with hard labor. He pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing.
According to Ghana News Agency, prosecuting Police Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh informed the court that the complainant, Rambow Benjamin, and the convict both resided at Atwereboanda, a community in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality. The complainant, after a day’s work, had kept his gold detector machine in his room at Atwereboanda. However, on October 20, 2024, he discovered that the machine had been stolen.
Sergeant Assan-Donkoh stated that through the complainant’s inquiries, he received information that Godden had stolen the gold detector machine. Subsequently, the matter was reported to the police, leading to Godden’s apprehension. During interrogation at the police station, Godden confessed to the crime and led officers to an abandoned uncompleted building at Atwereboanda, where he had hidden the gold detector machine, which was subsequently retrieved.
