Kumasi: Artisans and spare parts dealers at Suame Industrial Area, popularly known as Suame Magazine, have issued a call for a permanent fire station to enable swift responses to fire outbreaks and other emergencies. The demand comes after a recent fire disaster that devastated the region, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Lukeman Mohammed Nuhu Appiadu, the Ashanti Regional Chair of the Ghana National Association of Garages (GNAG), emphasized the necessity of installing CCTV cameras and fire detectors at the country's largest auto industrial zone. His appeal was made during a visit by Members of Parliament (MPs) from Kumasi to the victims of the fire incident.
The MPs, including Mr. Francis Asenso Boakye from Bantama, Mr. Ekow Vincent Assafuah from Old Tafo, Mr. Michael Aidoo from Oforikrom, Mr. John Darko from Suame, and Nana Agyei Baffour from Manhyia South, visited the site to console the victims and discuss preventive measures against future disasters.
Mr. Appiadu highlighted the need for infrastructure improvements such as road networks for better movement and emergency response, modern healthcare facilities, and stable electricity supply. He also called for capacity building and technology transfer programs to enhance artisans' skills in repairing modern vehicles, alongside sustainable financial support for those affected.
In addressing the MPs, Mr. Appiadu urged them to ensure their visit marks the beginning of substantial change rather than just a gesture of concern. "Our members have lost their livelihoods overnight. We need urgent interventions, including fire safety education, financial assistance, and better infrastructure to prevent such incidents in the future," he asserted.
MP Mr. Asenso Boakye, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, conveyed their solidarity and intent to aid the affected artisans and traders. He noted the extensive losses caused by the fire, which impacted both livelihoods and businesses. The MPs are committed to working on immediate interventions and implementing long-term measures to prevent future disasters in the industrial area.
Mr. Asenso Boakye identified several factors contributing to the fire, such as congestion, use of inflammable materials, and faulty electrical connections. He emphasized the need for urgent fire safety interventions like regular education and training, improved urban planning, and strict enforcement of fire safety regulations. The MPs also advocated for a well-equipped fire station within the Suame industrial enclave.
He assured the victims of their commitment to collaborate with government agencies, local authorities, and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at safeguarding Suame Magazine from future fire disasters.
