Strategic Action Launched to Combat Negative Employee Satisfaction and Toxic Workplaces in Ghana

Accra: The Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana (CIHRM), in collaboration with HRP Consult Limited and Data Insight Group of JOB Group Limited, is taking decisive action to combat declining employee satisfaction and a pervasive toxic workplace culture across Ghana.

According to Ghana News Agency, this strategic move according to a press statement issued by the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana (CIHRM) comes in response to alarming findings from a recent nationwide survey, which revealed a negative Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 20 in 2025, indicating a significant level of employee dissatisfaction.

The survey, encompassing 634 respondents and boasting a high completion rate, highlighted deep-rooted challenges in workplace culture, leadership, and employee experience. A toxic workplace environment was identified as a primary driver of this dissatisfaction, impacting both male and female employees, with female employee NPS (eNPS) at -26, considerably lower than male eNPS at -12, the statement said.

This disparity, the statement noted, suggested that women might have been disproportionately affected by workplace toxicity due to factors like inequitable treatment, lack of support, or systemic biases. The survey also revealed a significant gap in employee satisfaction, with 46 per cent expressing dissatisfaction compared to 26 per cent reporting high levels of engagement.

The concerns, the statement revealed, primarily revolved around workplace culture, leadership effectiveness, and overall job expectations. Mr. Ebenezer Obeng-Nyarkoh, Lead Analyst from the Data Insight Group, emphasised the precarious state of retirement planning and savings, noting that declining average retirement savings were keeping people longer at work.

He said approximately 1 per cent of the labour force aged 60 and above were actively working, a notable increase of seven-tenths point from 2024, with a gender distribution of 33 per cent females and 67 per cent males. Mr. Obeng-Nyarkoh also highlighted the critical importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with employee motivation and satisfaction for organizational success in 2025.

He stressed that companies proactively addressing employee concerns and leveraging new opportunities would be better positioned for growth. Mr. Leonard Quarcoopome, Managing Partner from HRP Consult Limited, said older employees, like all employees, faced significant challenges, including limited career development opportunities.

He added that traditional approaches to motivation and satisfaction were no longer sufficient, as employees now seek job security, psychological safety, good relationships with managers, and meaningful opportunities for career growth and development. In response to these findings, the CIHRM, HRP Consult Limited, and Data Insight Group are launching a series of initiatives.

Their team is committed to identifying root causes, implementing targeted interventions, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. These initiatives according to the statement aim to transform workplace culture, enhance employee satisfaction, and improve overall NPS by creating environments where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered.

The organisations stressed that addressing these concerns is essential for maintaining a motivated and engaged workforce across all industries and age groups. The collaborating entities said by listening to employee feedback and implementing strategic, forward-thinking solutions, businesses could transform challenges into catalysts for positive change.
