State Awaits Drug Analysis Report in High-Profile Case Involving Three Women

Accra: The State on Tuesday informed an Accra High Court that it was awaiting the analytical report on over 16 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs allegedly found on two South Africans and a Nigerian. The drugs, found on the three women, are suspected to be methamphetamine concealed in two suitcases.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Frederick Adu Gyamfi, an Assistant State Attorney, requested the court to remand the accused persons into the custody of the Narcotics Control Commission pending the conclusion of investigations. He stated, "Our update is that we are yet to receive the analytical report from the Ghana Standards Authority on the substances found on the accused during the arrest." He further requested a short adjournment, expressing that the report would be crucial for proceeding with the trial.

The defence counsel, who had recently been approached to represent the accused, argued for bail, highlighting the unfairness of prolonging the remand. The counsel pointed out that the accused had been in custody for more than a month and reiterated their right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Justice Kizita Koowa Quarshie, presiding over the court, advised the defence counsel to formally submit a bail application. The court has adjourned the matter to March 11, 2025, allowing time for the receipt of the analytical report.

The accused persons, whose names have not been disclosed, were apprehended at the Kotoka International Airport on January 20, 2025, by officials from the Narcotics Control Commission. The drugs, suspected to be methamphetamine, were allegedly hidden in two suitcases. The court is yet to take the pleas of the accused, although charges have been filed against them.
