New york: Fast-fashion giant Shein has initiated an investigation following the discovery of an image on its website that appeared to depict alleged murderer Luigi Mangione modeling a shirt.
According to Ghana News Agency, the image showed a likeness to Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel last year, wearing a white, patterned short-sleeved shirt priced at just under $10. The controversial picture has since been removed from the site.
The Chinese retailer explained that the image was provided by a seller on their platform and assured that a probe into the incident is underway. A spokesperson for Shein stated, “The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery. We have stringent standards for all listings on our platform. We are conducting a thorough investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes, and will take appropriate action against the vendor in line with our policies.”
Speculation arises that the image may have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI). Mangione was apprehended five days after the December 4 killing of Thompson and has been charged with murder and stalking. The 26-year-old has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges and is currently held without bail in a federal jail in Brooklyn.
The case has been surrounded by controversy, with prosecutors in the US alleging that Mangione has inspired others to resort to violence rather than engaging in reasoned debate. He is accused of leaving evidence that expresses disdain for the insurance industry. This high-profile case has led to Mangione amassing a following on social media, which has fueled anger towards private health insurers in the US.
