Sense of Urgency Needed to Address Education Challenges – Minister

Bawku: Mr. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, has emphasized the necessity for an urgent and objective approach to tackle the current educational challenges facing the country. He highlighted that education is crucial for the development of various sectors, yet it has been declining at all levels over the years.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Atanga addressed these issues during the zonal national education forum for the Upper East and North East Regions, themed 'Transforming Education for a Sustainable Future.' The forum, which focused on strategic priorities, brought together stakeholders from both regions, including teacher union leaders, educational institution heads, traditional rulers, and others.

The Minister, who is a teacher by profession, stressed the importance of building consensus on curricula reforms, infrastructural investments, and interventions aimed at expanding access and improving educational outcomes. He noted that the forum's theme aligns with the government's agenda to integrate sustainability into educational policies and reforms.

Mr. Atanga called for open discussions to develop actionable recommendations for comprehensive reform, aiming to create an inclusive and transformative educational system in Ghana. He urged stakeholders to envision an education system centered on innovation and lifelong learning, as highlighted by President John Dramani Mahama.

Expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Education and the National Education Forum Planning Committee, Mr. Atanga reaffirmed the government's commitment to educational transformation. He also appreciated the involvement of the North East Regional Minister, Mr. Ibrahim Tia, who encouraged active participation to influence policy outcomes.

Stakeholders at the forum raised concerns about the lack of early childhood education experts at the Kindergarten level and advocated for incentives to motivate professional teachers. Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi, a member of the National Education Forum Planning Committee, mentioned that the forum aims to gather ideas for transforming the educational sector using best practices for sustainable development.
