Scrap Dealer Jailed for Stealing Ghana Water Limited’s Fittings

Ashaiman: The Ashaiman Circuit Court presided over by His Worship Mr. Derrick Parden Eshun has sentenced a 20-year-old scrap dealer, Tahiru Issah, to 12 months in prison with hard labour. The conviction follows his guilty plea to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court on March 5, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, who prosecuted the case, stated that Tahiru Issah, a Nigerien residing in Fitter Line, a suburb of Ashaiman, was apprehended by the Gbetsile District Police on February 26, 2025. During their routine night patrol, the police noticed Issah carrying a black polythene bag containing suspiciously heavy items.

The prosecutor explained that upon searching the bag, the police found six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, all valued at GHS3,250.00, identified as property of the Ghana Water Limited. Issah was subsequently taken into custody at the Afienya Police Station, where he confessed to stealing the items from local residents.

Issah was charged with stealing and was subsequently processed for court proceedings. Meanwhile, Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for the Tema Region of Ghana Water Limited, expressed gratitude for the court's judgment. He highlighted the negative impact of recent meter-stealing incidents on the company's operations.

Dr. Eson urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities. He also warned scrap dealers and individuals involved in thefts of Ghana Water Limited installations that they would face legal consequences if caught.
