Sampa Chieftaincy Dispute Escalates: One Dead and Police Officer Injured

Sampa: The Sampa protracted chieftaincy dispute in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region turned deadly on Wednesday, as two feuding traditional factions engaged in a firefight that resulted in one fatality and a police officer sustaining severe gunshot wounds.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) responded by deploying military police reinforcements to restore order in the township, where many residents remained indoors due to the unrest. Mr. George Adane, the Jaman North District Chief Executive, confirmed in a telephone interview that the injured police officer is currently receiving treatment at the Sampa Government Hospital and is responding to care.

The violent clash also led to the destruction of property, with three residential houses and the Sampa Market reportedly set ablaze. The body of the deceased young man has been deposited at the government hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Mr. Adane explained that the conflict erupted around 1:00 PM, following reports that supporters of Nana Yaw Sammor-Duah II had learned of Nana Samgba Gyafla's impending gazettement. In response, they mobilized and took to the streets of Sampa to protest, which escalated into an exchange of gunfire between the supporters of the two factions.
