Sammy Gyamfi Must Resign for Public Misconduct – ACUC

Accra: The AfriKan Continental Union Consult (ACUC), a think-tank focused on African good governance, has called for the resignation of Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), following a viral video that has sparked public outrage.

According to Ghana News Agency, the controversial video depicts Mr. Gyamfi counting and handing over a significant amount of foreign currency to Madam Patricia Oduro Koranteng, also known as Nana Agradaa, who is a self-proclaimed evangelist. This act has been heavily criticized, prompting Dr. Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, the CEO of ACUC, to demand that Mr. Gyamfi resign or face dismissal by the president if the misconduct is confirmed.

Dr. Aziginaateeg emphasized that the incident tarnishes Ghana's international image and undermines the office of the president. This is particularly concerning as President John Dramani Mahama had recently introduced a code of conduct for government officials. Dr. Aziginaateeg described the situation as a crucial test of the president's commitment to good governance, suggesting that Mr. Gyamfi's resignation would set a precedent for ethical behavior among those in power.

The ACUC CEO further questioned the moral authority of the government to address issues like corruption, especially given that the transaction involved foreign currency and the CEO of a mineral board. He warned that the president's popularity could decline if he fails to enforce the code of conduct, advising a performance review of government appointees within six months.

Dr. Aziginaateeg highlighted the importance of clear governmental ideologies and the preparation of officers before they assume their duties. He cautioned that without such measures, the government could falter from the onset.

In response to the backlash, Mr. Gyamfi has issued an apology to Ghanaians and the president. He clarified that the donation was intended as a private act of generosity and expressed regret that it became public. Mr. Gyamfi acknowledged the public's disappointment, particularly among his supporters, and expressed sincere remorse for the incident.
