Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga Commemorates 100 Years of Faith and Service

Bolgatanga: The Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga has culminated its year-long centenary celebration with a focus on spiritual renewal, a change in mindset, and national unity as essential elements for promoting spiritual growth and national development.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event, themed 'Celebrating 100 Years of Walking Together as a Family of God,' brought together a diverse group of attendees, including parishioners, traditional leaders, Muslim clerics, and government officials. They gathered to reflect on the Church's 100-year history of faith and service within the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese.

During the Holy Mass, Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, emphasized the significance of the centenary as both a spiritual milestone and a moment for reflection and recommitment. He urged Christians to embrace selflessness, cultural renewal, and stronger family and community ties, noting that these elements are crucial for the country's development. Bishop Agyenta also recognized the challenges faced by the Church from 1925 to 2025, highlighting the role of faith, resilience, and grace in overcoming these obstacles.

Sheikh Alhaji Umar Yussif, the Upper East Regional Chief Imam, delivered a message of solidarity, commending the Church for its efforts in promoting peace, interfaith harmony, and regional development. He acknowledged the Church's role in uplifting the marginalized and standing for justice.

Mr. Abanga George Akuune, Chief of Dulugu and representative of the Bolgatanga Traditional Council, praised the Church as a beacon of hope and unity during community unrest. He highlighted the Church's contributions to healthcare, education, and social justice, which have significantly impacted the region's development.

In a goodwill message, Upper East Regional Minister Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri congratulated the Parish for its century-long contributions to national development. He recognized the Church's investments in education, health, agriculture, and social welfare, describing it as a reliable development partner. Mr. Akamugri also appealed for prayers for national leadership and for resolving the ongoing Bawku conflict.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish was founded in February 1925 by the White Fathers (Missionaries of Africa) who arrived in Navrongo in 1906 from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.
