Accra: The Board of Governors of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) has inaugurated a 50-bed capacity hostel and an ultra-modern video conferencing facility for the University. These new facilities were sponsored by the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Liberia, respectively, to support and promote maritime education in the sub-region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the inauguration of these facilities was part of the opening of the 33rd Meeting of the RMU Board in Accra. The ceremony was led by Alhaji Fanday Turay, the Chancellor of RMU, who commended the Republic of Sierra Leone for its continuing contribution to the growth and development of the University. He also praised the Republic of Liberia for sponsoring the 50-bed capacity hostel, highlighting these developments as a testament to the collective commitment of member states to the regional institution.
Additional facilities inaugurated include a Mosque, Desktop Steering Simulators, and a Boat and GMDSS Laboratory. Chancellor Turay emphasized the importance of these contributions, stating that they reflect a positive competition among member states to enhance the University's capabilities. He expressed optimism that with continued support, RMU would achieve greater heights in infrastructural development.
Mr. Ebrima Sillah, the Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure of the Republic of The Gambia, reiterated The Gambia's commitment to RMU's growth and excellence. He recalled the construction and inauguration of a 54-bedroom capacity hostel for students in 2017, emphasizing the importance of a conducive learning environment for academic success. Minister Sillah noted that these recent upgrades would significantly enhance the teaching and learning experience at RMU and are a testament to the importance of infrastructure investment in raising academic standards.
The Minister expressed a desire for more of such cooperative efforts among member states to propel RMU into becoming a world-class institution for maritime training. He affirmed The Gambia's commitment to working with all Member States, the Board of Governors, and RMU's leadership to strengthen the institution academically, financially, and structurally.
