The retired nurses, midwives and physician assistants Club-Ho has celebrated?its 10th anniversary in Ho in the Volta Region.The Club was inaugurated on June 9, 2015, and aimed to bring all retired caregivers under a unified body, foster love, unity, and fraternal spirit among members, improve members' interpersonal relationships and assist members in genuine financial difficulties.It also aimed to cooperate and collaborate with other bodies to advance the practice of nursing, midwifery, and medical care in Ghana and abroad, and organise annual and or bi-annual get-together parties and visit places of interest to develop the cultural, moral, and spiritual well-being of members.Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) who was the guest commended members of the Club for their service to the nation and humanity.She described the theme for the anniversary: 'Life after retirement in good health, wealth and happiness' as apt.The VC said a healthy elderly popu lation greatly benefited the country and the larger community, so steps must be taken to satisfy their retirement needs in a comprehensive and all-encompassing manner.Prof. Aziato noted that the state, society, and the individual all had vital roles to play in creating a healthy, wealthy, and happy elderly population.She stressed the importance of individual choice in upholding healthy habits, such as eating a good, well-balanced diet, exercising frequently, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.Prof. Aziato said globally people were living longer lives due to advances in medical diagnostics, healthcare, nutrition, and technology. The VC emphasised the need for people to have health insurance and ensure regular medical examinations to early any health problem as early identification and treatment lead to a cure.She urged individuals to save and invest so they could have additional income for the inadequate pension and also engaged in entrepreneurial activities to ensure a more fulfilling retirement.Mama Attrato II, Queen Mother of Ho-Dome also commended the Club members for their role in saving lives when they were in active service.She urged members of the Club to make their presence known by visiting schools and communities to educate the children and people about the importance of living a healthy life.The Queen Mother admonished health workers to do their work professionally, ensuring that no one died through their hands as a result of negligenceMr Siegfried Kwasi Sakyi, Chairman of the Club in his welcome address disclosed that the Club started with 19 members in Ho and now extended to Keta, Adidome, Mafi-Kumasi and currently has 190 active members.Source: Ghana News Agency
