Accra: Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, has pledged her commitment to prioritize sports as a major tool in lifting the image of the Ghana Prisons Service. She emphasized that sports play a significant role in building both officers and inmates physically and mentally.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie made this statement during a visit from a delegation of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), led by President Charles Osei Asibey. The delegation visited to congratulate her on her new role and discuss the growth of armwrestling within the service. Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie shared her personal experience with sports, highlighting its impact on her discipline and confidence.
The Director-General mentioned that the Directorate is engaging with other authorities to encourage participation in sports among inmates and officers to correct behavior and discover new talent. She assured that her office is committed to making sports a priority in transforming the image of the Prison Service.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie added that this transformational plan aims to aid the successful reintegration of prisoners by equipping them with essential skills and confidence for the future. The Ghana Prisons Service has a history of contributing to sports development, producing notable athletes who have represented Ghana.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of GAF and the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, expressed optimism about the partnership with the Prisons Service. He reflected on the service's past achievements in sports and emphasized the potential benefits of revamping sports, including public relations and rebranding opportunities.
He congratulated Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie and wished her success in her tenure. During the meeting, the Ghana Prisons Service and the GAF agreed to establish an armwrestling club comprising officers and inmates to compete locally.
The meeting was attended by key figures from the GAF, including Vice President Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Technical Director Mr. Husseini Akuetteh Addy, and Greater Accra Armwrestling Secretary Mr. Henry Quarshie. Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie has been named a patron of Ghana Armwrestling.
