Police Warn of Legal Consequences for Post-Election Lawlessness

ACCRA: Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi has issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in post-election violence, looting, and destruction, urging them to cease their activities or face legal repercussions. The warning comes amid escalating tensions in various regions following the elections.According to Ghana News Agency, ACP Ansah-Akrofi, in a media briefing, emphasized that despite the challenging situation and extreme provocation, police officers have refrained from using firearms. She cautioned that while no firearms have been deployed so far, the authorities are prepared to respond lawfully to any further provocations to safeguard the nation's peace. The police are committed to maintaining order and ensuring that the country's stability is not compromised.The Assistant Commissioner detailed several incidents of unrest, including crowd formations in Cantonments, Accra, and an attack on the Ghana Gas facility, which resulted in injuries to a military officer. Additional di sturbances involved masked individuals demanding employment at the Ghana Petroleum Authority and the Passport Office. Similar unrest occurred at the Engineers Centre in Asuboi, Ayensuano in the Eastern Region, and at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority in Tema. In the Bono Region's Wenchi, a group attempted to storm a police station to free detainees.ACP Ansah-Akrofi also announced the arrest of 10 more suspects, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to 107. All suspects are being processed in compliance with legal procedures. She reaffirmed the security agencies' dedication to maintaining peace and order, urging public cooperation with authorities to ensure the continued stability of the nation.
