Petitions for Chief Justice Removal: Mahama is Committed to Upholding Rule of Law – Government Spokesman

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama is committed to upholding the rule of law in response to petitions calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, has refuted allegations of a political agenda to remove the Chief Justice from office.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ofosu addressed a press conference at the Presidency in Accra, countering claims made by the suspended Chief Justice about a political motive behind the removal process. Mr. Ofosu clarified that there is no political agenda involved, emphasizing that President Mahama is acting in accordance with the 1992 Constitution.

Mr. Ofosu explained that the President, having been sworn in by the Chief Justice, is bound by his oath to abide by the Constitution, which mandates action upon receiving such petitions. He stated that any inaction by the President would constitute a breach of the Constitution.

He further highlighted that all public officials, including the President, must adhere to the laws of Ghana, without exception. Mr. Ofosu quoted former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who said, "When you join the game, you play by the rules," underscoring the necessity for all officials to comply with legal processes.

Mr. Ofosu addressed claims of political motives as unfounded and lacking evidence, rejecting them strongly. He expressed regret that the Chief Justice added to the commentary initially driven by opposition elements, despite the President's compliance with constitutional requirements.

The Government respects the rights of the suspended Chief Justice to express her views, provided they align with the constitutional framework. Mr. Ofosu emphasized the need for confidentiality as required by the Constitution and noted that the Presidency has refrained from further commentary until the Committee concludes its investigation.

In conclusion, Mr. Ofosu reiterated the President's fidelity to the Constitution, asserting that every action taken has been by the book, with no constitutional breaches identified.
