Accra: Parliament temporarily halted its proceedings on Monday to honor the sudden passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, a Member of Parliament for Akwatia representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Ghana News Agency, the announcement of the late Kumi's death was made during the parliamentary session by Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin. He informed the assembly that Kumi, a first-term MP, had unexpectedly passed away. Afenyo-Markin described Kumi as a young politician from the Eastern Region who had shown great promise in contributing to the nation's democratic processes.
The Minority Leader highlighted the late MP's attributes, noting his intellect and diligent nature. He mentioned that Kumi had been in good health over the weekend and had actively participated in parliamentary committee work, making his sudden demise all the more unexpected to his colleagues. Afenyo-Markin fondly recalled Kumi's presence in Parliament, emphasizing his non-controversial nature and the positive impact he had in his brief tenure.
Kumi was regarded as a rising star within the NPP, with a commendable academic background that included three postgraduate degrees: an MBA in Corporate Governance, an LLB, and an MSc in Defense and International Politics. The Minority Leader also offered his condolences to Kumi's family and constituents.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga also expressed his sorrow, acknowledging the loss of a promising politician. He remarked that Kumi's potential was a significant asset for the nation's governance and that his untimely departure was a loss not only to Akwatia but to the entire country. The House observed a minute of silence in honor of the late legislator, who is survived by his wife and children.
The late Kumi had recently been involved in legal proceedings when the Supreme Court overturned a contempt conviction issued by the Koforidua High Court. This conviction was related to his participation in parliamentary activities despite an interim injunction during an ongoing legal contest over his election. The court had previously issued a bench warrant for his arrest for disobeying the injunction.
