Parliament Approves GHS 2.8 Billion for Road Maintenance

Accra: Parliament has approved GHS 2.8 billion for road maintenance this year to enhance the transport of goods and services. In 2024, 43 percent of the country's total roads were maintained through re-shaping, gravelling, and patching of potholes.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Isaac Adjei Mensah, the Chairman of Parliament's Roads and Transport Committee, stated that road maintenance formed part of the government's resetting agenda. He mentioned that the government inherited a total debt stock of GHS 105 billion under the road sector and a GHS 109 billion commitment to road contractors. The arrears commitment under the road sector referred to ongoing road projects as well as those stalled and road contracts signed.

Mr. Adjei Mensah also noted that efforts were underway to re-introduce road tolls via innovative technology to enhance the government's revenue mobilization drive. The legislator, who is also the Member of Parliament for Wassa East in the Western Region, expressed optimism that the Government's US$10 billion strategic infrastructure agenda, known as the 'Big Push,' would improve road conditions across the country.

Meanwhile, Parliament passed the Appropriation Bill, authorizing Ghana's Finance Minister to spend public funds for various proposed programs and projects outlined in the budget. This authorizes the government to access funds from the Consolidated Fund, public funds, and other related sources.
