New york: Jessica Tisch, Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has commended Ghana's leadership in regional security and pledged expanded collaboration in policing. She made the remarks during a high-level working visit by Mr. Christian Tetteh-Yohuno, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) to the NYPD Headquarters at One Police Plaza, a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency said.
According to Ghana News Agency, the engagement formed part of IGP Yohuno's ongoing U.S. law enforcement partnership tour, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the NYPD in areas such as technology-driven policing, counterterrorism, intelligence-led operations, and urban crime prevention. Commissioner Tisch briefed the delegation on NYPD's advanced public safety systems, including integrated surveillance cameras, real-time crime centers, and drone technology designed to enhance situational awareness and operational response.
The visit followed IGP Yohuno's earlier meeting at the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) New York Field Office, where discussions focused on cybercrime, transnational fraud investigations, and counterterrorism cooperation. Both engagements were facilitated by the FBI Legal Attach© Office in Accra and supported by the U.S. Embassy in Accra.
During a live demonstration, IGP Yohuno observed how NYPD's drone and camera systems were deployed in real time to monitor incidents, track suspects, and prevent crime. 'Seeing how the NYPD employs drone and camera technology to prevent crime in real time underscores how critical technology has become to modern policing,' he said. 'The Ghana Police Service is committed to leveraging similar smart policing tools to make our communities safer, more secure, and more resilient,' he added.
In a landmark development, both leaders agreed to explore the exchange placement of police officers in each other's headquarters to deepen institutional cooperation and knowledge sharing. Under the arrangement, the NYPD would consider assigning an officer to the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra under its International Liaison Unit, while the Ghana Police Service would post a liaison officer to the NYPD's Regional Intelligence Support Center in New York City. 'The initiative aims to promote continuous intelligence exchange, operational coordination, and professional development between the two agencies,' the statement noted.
The engagement ended with a guided tour of the NYPD Joint Operations and Counterterrorism Centres, offering the Ghanaian delegation insight into how technology and interagency coordination support public safety in New York City.
