Nkwanta: Mr. Bernard Portakey, the Principal of Nkwanta Community Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), has emphasised the crucial role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in addressing Ghana's unemployment crisis. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Portakey said institutions such as NVTI provide students with practical skills that are recognized globally, enabling them to excel in their chosen fields.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Portakey noted that TVET programs equip students with hands-on training, preparing them for the workforce. Graduates can pursue various career paths, including opportunities in the security services with the National Proficiency Certificate. Mr. Portakey also stated that TVET places a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, teaching students how to establish and manage their own businesses, thereby contributing to the country's economic growth.
He revealed that the institute faces a significant challenge due to inadequate classrooms and facilities, which hinders its ability to accommodate a growing student population. Mr. Portakey has appealed to the government for support to address the infrastructure and other learning materials needs of the institute.
Mr. Wise Bediako, the institute administrator, has highlighted the value of TVET in empowering apprentices to acquire skills and become self-sufficient. He said the programs are designed to equip students with the skills they need to start their own businesses or excel in their chosen trades, ultimately becoming productive members of society.
