Accra: Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, known in private life as Dr Kingsley A. Fletcher, was on Tuesday elected to represent the Greater Accra Region on the Council of State. The international consultant, author, and public speaker polled 40 of a total of 57 valid votes cast.
According to Ghana News Agency, his closest contender, Afotey-Agbo Joseph Nii Laryea, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister, polled 16 votes. Summertime Kwabillna Ampong, a Human Resource Manager of Maaha Beach Resort, secured one vote. The remaining 13 aspirants did not secure any votes. Notably, three candidates, Obed Nyarko, Albert Borketey Naawu, and Musah Ziyad, withdrew from the race just before the polls opened.
The election was delayed for about five hours due to a late arrival of delegates at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, where the voting was held. Voting started at approximately 11:50 AM and concluded at 12:30 PM. A temporary suspension occurred early in the process when security officers restricted some unauthorized individuals from entering the voting room. It was Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, who intervened to ensure the voting continued smoothly.
Following the vote count, a scuffle nearly disrupted proceedings, leading Nene Adamtey to leave the voting room before the official declaration. Prior to the polls, he urged delegates to elect a trustworthy candidate to make Accra a safe and prosperous region. His focus areas include education, culture preservation, resource mobilization, conflict resolution, and social justice, with an emphasis on justice and equal opportunities, particularly for Africans.
Mr Ibrahim praised the peaceful conduct of the elections and urged aspirants to work together for regional development. Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo also emphasized her commitment to engaging all aspirants to ensure the welfare and prosperity of the region.
