NDC Pledges Responsible Use of Parliamentary Majority to Transform Ghana

Accra: Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has assured that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will utilize its parliamentary majority responsibly to benefit the country. Mr Ayariga emphasized that the NDC's two-thirds majority in the House presents an opportunity to implement positive changes and significant constitutional reforms.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Ayariga made these remarks following the swearing-in of Madam Ewurabena Aubynn, the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, on Tuesday. With 184 seats and support from four Independent parliamentary candidates, the NDC holds a two-thirds majority totaling 188 seats. The Minority NPP currently has 87 seats after the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the late Akwatia MP.

Mr Ayariga reiterated President John Dramani Mahama's commitment to using the majority wisely and for the benefit of Ghanaians. He stated that the NDC aims to reset Ghana without abusing the majority power entrusted to them by the electorate.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin administered the Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance to Madam Ewurabena Aubynn. He provided her with copies of the Parliamentary Standing Orders and the Constitution of Ghana, emphasizing the expectations of the Ablekuma North constituents for improved living conditions.

The swearing-in was marked by a walkout from the Minority Caucus after the Speaker declined their request for a preliminary statement. Mr Frank Annor-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Caucus and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, had sought to make a statement, which was not permitted.

In the recent re-run of 19 polling stations on July 11, Madam Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC won with 34,090 votes, surpassing NPP's Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who received 33,881 votes.
