NCCE Urges Ada Students to Combat Cholera Through Hygiene Education.

Ada: Ms Faustina Blewusi, the Ada East District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged students in the Ada East District to maintain good hygiene practices to curb the spread of cholera and diarrhoea cases. Ms Blewusi gave the advice during an inter-school debate competition organised by the NCCE in the Ada East District to combat violence in the December 7 election.According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Blewusi, publicly known as Mama Megbenya II, educated the students on the outbreak of cholera in Ada and disclosed how embarrassed she felt after visiting a church one Sunday morning, only to see people engaging in open defecation. She recounted an experience from when she resumed office last year, where she was confronted with open defecation upon visiting a coastal community to educate them on sanitation. The Director tasked the students to contribute to the elimination of open defecation, which she identified as a significant issue in Ada, stating that their efforts would significantly aid in ending cholera and diarrhoea outbreaks in the district. She encouraged the students to spread the message of good sanitation practices to their peers, parents, and the wider community, positioning them as potential ambassadors for a healthier environment.Ms Blewusi further educated the students on proper hand washing under running water with soap to avoid contamination. She urged them to keep their surroundings tidy and to report to the nearest hospital when experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea. She reassured the students that treatment for diarrhoea and cholera cases at the hospital is free, underscoring that 'the Ghana Health Service treatment of cholera and diarrhoea is free, and so do not hesitate to report early symptoms to the nearest health facility.'
