NCCE Director Urges Students to Embrace Environmentally Friendly Practices

Pwalugu: Madam Dorcas Atia, the Talensi District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on students to adopt environmentally friendly practices to help protect the planet and promote public health. Speaking during the World Environment Day celebration held at Pwalugu, Madam Atia emphasized the urgent need for young people to take responsibility for their surroundings by reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling plastic.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event, organised by the Talensi District Office of the NCCE, brought together students from Anapo Academy JHS, Pwalugu JHS, and Takano JHS, under the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution' with a focus on the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In her address, Madam Atia cautioned students about the dangers of environmental pollution, particularly from plastic waste, which posed serious health and environmental risks.

She encouraged them to keep their homes, schools, and communities clean always. 'Our environment is our responsibility,' she said. 'When you throw plastics around carelessly, you are endangering not just the environment but also your own health. I urge you all to reduce the use of plastics, reuse them when possible, and recycle them to keep our surroundings clean.'

She further warned that poor sanitation could lead to the outbreak of diseases and stressed the need for regular environmental hygiene practices among students. As part of the programme, students displayed their understanding of the theme through performances. Anapo Academy JHS presented a poem emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation, while Takano JHS and Pwalugu JHS performed drama sketches highlighting the consequences of plastic pollution and the importance of the three Rs.

The celebration ended with renewed enthusiasm among the students to become champions of environmental cleanliness and sustainability in their schools and communities.
