Tarkwa: The Tarkwa District Court Two has sentenced a student to 18 months' imprisonment for snatching the mobile phone of a student at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa. Bright Atanga, 18, was charged with unlawful entry and stealing, to which he pleaded guilty.According to Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Adwoa Yeboah informed the court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Osei Asare ESQ, that the complainant, Samuel Dontoh, is a businessman residing in Nkamponase, while the convict resides in Cyanide, both located within the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. On April 14, 2025, the police received a distress call reporting that Atanga was being beaten by a mob at Nkamponase, near UMaT, Tarkwa.Sergeant Yeboah explained that the police intervened and took Atanga to the hospital for treatment before escorting him to the police station for questioning. Subsequently, the complainant reported to the police that upon returning from town, he was informed that Atanga had jumped his fence wall into the com pound and had been apprehended by a mob.Atanga admitted to the crime and confessed to the police that he had snatched a mobile phone from a UMaT student. When pursued by the victim, he scaled the complainant's fence wall to seek refuge. The prosecutor stated that Atanga claimed the mob apprehended him and recovered the stolen mobile phone.
