Central Tongu: The Central Tongu District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has commemorated Citizenship Week 2025 with civic engagement activities in more than 30 Basic schools across the district. The initiative was held under the national theme: 'Ghana's Future: The Role of the Ghanaian Child.'According to Ghana News Agency, district civic education officers, including Mr. Frank Eli Azumah, Madam Victoria Afi Bosson, Madam Delali Adzomani, Madam Doris Elikplim Wagba, and Mr. Ali Amadu, visited schools to sensitize pupils on the role of the Ghanaian child in national development. The team emphasized that children were not merely beneficiaries of public policy but active contributors to national progress. They encouraged students to uphold values such as honesty, peacebuilding, environmental responsibility, and inclusion, positioning themselves as future leaders and responsible citizens.In line with the celebration, the NCCE also observed World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, under the global theme, 'Ending Plastic Pollution.' To mark the occasion, three schools, Mafi-Devime D/A J.H.S, Aklamador D/A J.H.S, and Atitekpo D/A J.H.S, were selected to develop and present innovative plastic recycling projects. Addressing students during the event, Mr. George Amey, the District Director of the NCCE, urged them to adopt environmentally sustainable practices through the principles of 'Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.' He stressed the importance of collective action in addressing the country's plastic waste challenges, especially among the youth.The selected schools demonstrated creative and practical approaches to plastic recycling and environmental conservation. At the end of the programme, certificates of recognition were awarded to participating schools for their outstanding initiatives. The students also pledged to become civic ambassadors for environmental sustainability within their schools and communities. The 2025 Citizenship Week and World Environment Day activities reflect the NCCE' s ongoing commitment to nurturing responsible citizenship and environmental consciousness among young Ghanaians.
